The BA Cultural Outreach Sector, in collaboration with the Arab Organization for Translation, is organizing a seminar titled “British Knowledge in the History of Oman and the Mashriq,” featuring a select group of academics and specialized researchers. The event will take place at 10:00 am on Thursday, 2 April, in the Delegates Hall at the Library’s Conference Center.

The seminar will focus on presenting and discussing the translated works of Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Harthy as a model for studies addressing the history of Oman and the Mashriq, while highlighting the role of the historical encyclopedias he compiled in documenting the history of the region.

The day’s events will begin with the opening session at 10:00 am, led by Dr. Bassam Baraka, President of the Arab Organization for Translation, followed by a keynote speech by Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the BA.

The seminar’s program includes several academic sessions. The first session, titled “Encyclopedias of British Secret Documents,” will be chaired by Dr. Fahd Al-Mounzari and will cover four topics: the Encyclopedia of Oman’s Secret Documents, the Encyclopedia of the Political Resident’s Diaries, the Encyclopedia of Oman’s Coastal Borders (the Encyclopedia of Abu Musa and Tunb Islands and the Encyclopedia of the Omani Coast), and the Encyclopedia of Oil and Borders in the Gulf States. It will be followed by an open discussion.

The second session, titled “Encyclopedias on the Roots of the Modern Arab State,” will be chaired by Dr. Bassam Baraka, with the participation of a number of researchers, and will conclude with an extensive academic dialogue.

The academic events will conclude with a third session titled “The Book Collection,” chaired by Dr. Mohamed El-Gamal, which will examine the collection of the translated books.

This seminar stresses the role of the BA as a center of cultural and intellectual influence, striving to support scientific research and raise awareness of the importance of encyclopedias as integrated sources of knowledge that contribute to a reinterpretation of Arab history through a modern scientific lens, while building bridges of intellectual cooperation between academic and cultural institutions in the Arab world.
