The Bibliotheca Alexandrina takes part in the fourth edition of Iqraa Marathon, which is the largest reading marathon that witnesses the competition of six Arab countries, namely Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. This four-day event takes place from 15 to 18 January 2025.
The event is organized by King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. It will witness the participation of nineteen libraries from the Arab world.
The marathon seeks to motivate the Arab community to read in public libraries, believing in the role of libraries in enriching the scientific and cultural life of societies, and the importance of reading as one of the most vital means of knowledge enrichment for future generations. In addition, the marathon aims to inspire one million readers by 2030.
The marathon also aims to raise environmental awareness by ensuring that Ithra Center plants a tree for every 100 pages read, where readers will receive a medal as a motivational souvenir related to the occasion. Medals are divided into four categories: a brass medal for reading 100 pages, a bronze medal for reading 200 pages, a silver medal for reading 500 pages, and a gold medal for reading 1000 pages. It should be noted that this year's marathon aspires to reach one million read pages with the purpose of planting 10,000 trees.
