Dr. Ahmed Zayed: AI is not an option but a strategic necessity to achieve sustainable development, and an ethical and legal framework for AI must be developed to protect the rights of individuals

Prof. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, said that artificial intelligence, thanks to its unprecedented capabilities and the use of fast-paced technology, has become one of the main drivers of innovation and transformation in various sectors. He explained that artificial intelligence effectively contributes to addressing many of the challenges facing the world today through real-time analysis of big data, predicting future needs, and providing innovative solutions.

This came during the seminar "Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development: Future Visions and Perceptions", organized by the BA Academic Research Sector, in cooperation with the Egyptian Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center and the UAE's TRENDS Research and Advisory. The event was held at the Information and Decision Support Center in the New Administrative Capital, and witnessed the participation of Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation; Dr. Osama El-Gohary, Assistant Prime Minister and Head of the Information and Decision Support Center; Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS Research and Advisory; Dr. Mohammed Hamad Al-Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Government's Cybersecurity Council; and H.E. Maryam Al-Kaabi, the UAE Ambassador to Egypt.

Dr. Zayed stated that achieving sustainable development and its seventeen goals is a global target and an urgent necessity to ensure a better quality of life for future generations.

He explained that artificial intelligence technologies contribute to improving early medical diagnosis of diseases, and enhancing health care systems such as vaccination campaigns and other health initiatives.

He also pointed to the importance of regulating social relations between people and smart systems, and directing artificial intelligence towards useful results while reducing its risks, stressing the need to educate young people to focus on the ethical framework for the uses of artificial intelligence and respect for human privacy.

He concluded his speech by stressing the need to take a proactive approach to guide AI towards achieving sustainable development while preserving Arab identity and traditions.
